Until today, the lack of LGBT representation among Disney characters had never occurred to me, simply because it seemed so incredibly implausible that it wasn’t even worth the frustration. The pinnacle of “wholesome family values” bringing a lil’ diversity into the mix? Psssh! But as it turns out, I’ve never been so happy to be proven wrong.
This past Sunday, the Disney-ABC show “Once Upon a Time” featured a sniffle-inducing scene in which Mulan (nearly!) reveals her hidden feelings for Princess Aurora, A.K.A. “Sleeping Beauty.” I think the only reason the internet isn’t blowing up about this is because they are too busy ugly-crying after watching this clip:
Whether or not Disney will choose to include this aspect of the Mulan character beyond “Once Upon a Time” remains to be seen. I know it’s hard to find time for a man or woman when you’re taking down evildoers and hanging out with dragons, but I am going to keep my fingers firmly crossed this isn’t the last LGBT sign of life from our Disney overlords.
