Stuart Varney, a host on Fox Business, thinks the absence of women in boardrooms has more to do with our hysterical, uterine-controlled brains than with discrimination. In discussion with Scottie Hughes of the Tea Party News Network, the host asked if companies should feel pressure to hire more women. His answer is no, and he goes on to defend sexism in technology with this embarrassing question: “Is there something about the female brain that is a deterrent for getting on board with tech? Is there?”
Varney acknowledges his being politically incorrect, but he completely misses the mark here. It’s not about political correctness; it’s about spreading stale and harmful notions on intellect and gender. Luckily, his contributor Charles Payne said the obvious: if women are staying away from tech companies, it’s not because our brains operate differently but because we’re discouraged by our sexist culture. Hughes also suggests that modern families cannot survive without women in business, saying that today a woman cannot be expected to stay at home and men cannot be expected to be breadwinners. Amen, Scottie!
