Listen Up: Best Coast Is About To Make You Cry More Then Ever

by kelsey haight

Best Coast got me through my first break-up, funeral, homesickness, and pretty much a decade of teen angst. I remember driving around during summer feeling so hopeful and young, yet sooo looow and moody. Best Coast was probably my only best friend at one point…therefore, I went to see them at a music festival so I could cry front row. But thanks to this binaural (360-degree field of sound) recording from Ryan Reichenfeld of “Baby I’m Crying,” we can feel like Bethany Consentino is serenading us while we weep next to one another!

Bethany Consentino and Bobb Bruno have always had a way with style, sounds, moods and audio quality. Throughout the evolution of Best Coast, they have gone from lo-fi, static-y on their debut album, Crazy For You, to a more tidy, intentional sound on The Only Place. All the while staying true their aesthetic and effective emotional and musical experience. Now the West Coast duo is back in the studio with 3D binaural techniques so we can cry some more!

According to Pitchfork, the audio has “the intent of relaying more immersive, representative playback. Binaural recordings utilize microphones placed within a human dummy head.” Boy, oh boy, does this sound work on my tear-ducts. Bethany gives us something to look forward to in an interview with Dazed Digital: “there’s a mixture of sounds in terms of the style of songs, too. I definitely didn’t write a linear record this time around.” Best Coast has yet to release any formal info about their next record except for the fact that songs are written and they are about to record so GET HYPED.

In conversation with Dazed Digital, Bethany admits, “I’ve always wanted Best Coast’s music to be relatable, no matter what the subject of the song is about. I’ve just always hoped that people could listen to Best Coast and feel some type of way.” Check out the video below and let me know if you get weepy when Bethany croons, “my heart is open like a door, but I don’t trust you like before.” Wow that tugs on my heart strings. Thank you Best Coast for always taking strides to give us allllll the feels.
