Teaching girls to play loud instruments, form a band, command a stage, and all-around empower themselves in many ways is what rock camp is all about. Of all the feminist causes near and dear to my heart, rock camp is one of the most inspiring and consistently rewarding-and I can’t help but wish I had spent a week at camp as a kid, middle-schooler, or teen. That’s why it’s a great idea to support Girls Rock Camp Alliance’s benefit show at Park Slope’s Rock Shop. Featuring Sword and Sandal, PALOMAR, Hospitality, DJ sets by Shirley Braha and New York Noise, and a reading by Jennifer Baumgardner, author of Look Both Ways, plus a raffle of awesome rock camp gear, this show is part of their 50 Shows in 50 States national fundraiser. $10 at The Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, (718) 230-5740. photo courtesy shapingyouth.org
