Potty Protection

by Eileen Milman

The expression “powdering my nose” (which I’ve always been told was the polite way to excuse one’s self to the bathroom) doesn’t aptly describe the struggle of using a public toilet. It can be a lengthy process that can include finding a place to hang a purse, unraveling rolls of toilet paper to shield one’s hiney, and kicking the flusher so you don’t have to be exposed to God knows what flesh eating bacteria, etc.

I have never bothered lining toilet seats. My preferred method has always been the “squat,” which seems to be the tried and true NYC method. Most pizzerias and Starbucks are usually lacking in hand soap – so forget about having any fancy toilet seat covers to protect your tush with. It’s usually a blessing to find a bathroom that doesn’t smell like bum pee, let alone a door that locks.

So when I read about Toletta, I was amused. Toletta is an Ottawan luxury paper toilet seat cover manufacturer, and they have this bizarre project runway-esque ad campaign, featuring fashion designer Laura Dreger’s “first couture paper dress from disposable toilet seat covers.”

Apparently, these toilet seat covers are not only portable, but they are very trendy as well. Gina Cicero, a makeup artist for the campaign, comments, “As a professional make up artist, I often work on a set and the only toilet around is usually a nasty public toilet. I carry Tolettas in my Louis Vuitton Artsy bag because you never know what’s on that toilet seat. These cute little travel packs are a ‘must-have” purse accessory.’”

Although the idea of toting around toilet seat covers in a Louis Vuitton purse seems pretty ridiculous to me, I must admit that they have some merit. I fully support efforts of hygiene promotion and realize that not everyone is a lazy dirt-bag like I am.

Toletta also gives a percentage of their proceeds to Breast Cancer Research and Child Poverty Awareness which is awesome.

So hey – Why not give your toilet hovering thighs a rest? Check them out!
