Yesterday we reported an apparent hate crime on Sharmeka Moffitt, a 20-year-old from Louisiana, who was allegedly set on fire by three men who then scrawled ‘KKK’ on her vehicle. Well, in a completely bizarre and unexpected twist, Louisiana authorities reported that Sharmeka confessed to setting herself on fire and fabricated the story about the three men attacking her.
Sharmeka, who is currently in the hospital in critical condition, confessed to setting herself on fire and putting ‘KKK’ and a racial slur onto her car with toothpaste. Police reportedly linked her fingerprints to a lighter and bottle of lighter fluid found at the scene. Her motive remains unclear.
Sharmeka’s family has released a statement regarding the revelation:
“Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies. We are sincerely sorry for any problems this may have caused and wish to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers and support we have received from friends, acquaintances, church organizations and government officials. Over the coming days and weeks, our focus will be on Sharmeka and her recovery.”
