In her usual funny but pointed way, Ellen has called out the Boy Scouts on their rather un-scout-ly policy of banning gay men from their organization. In a clip from a recent episode, Ellen puts in her two cents about the Boy Scouts’ decision to postpone their vote on whether to allow the participation of openly gay members and leaders in the future. In her support of allowing gay members, Ellen mentions that they will be following the footsteps of “the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, all of the United Kingdom and Cher” in treating gays equally (not to mention the Girl Scouts, who have no policies banning anyone joining or leading their troops).
But the most the poignant moment, around 1:30, is when she reminds us what the mission of the Boy and Girl scouts really is. She says, “What they are trying to teach kids is important. They are trying to teach kids to be leaders…And the more we try to teach people how to accept people for who they are, the more self confident they will be and the better leaders they’ll become.”
Well, said Ellen, well said.
