In the Ukraine, power has always rested in the hands of men. Women have been victims of sexual trafficking and exploitation. Misogyny has been a part of the Soviet culture for centuries causing many feminist movements to rise and fight their oppressors.
The ‘Asgarda,’ a new tribe of empowered women, is developing in the Carpathian Mountains. Thirty-year-old Katerina Tamouska leads the tribe of 150 women, varying in ages. Using the tribal traditions of the Scythian Amazons of ancient Greek Mythology, the Asgarda train in martial arts and learn life skills and science. They also seek complete autonomy from men. I am sure you will agree when I say that these women are amazing!
Not much has been documented about them until renowned French photographer, Guillaume Herbaut, met the Asgarda back in 2004 in the midst of the Orange Revolution. Be inspired by these photos and shout hell yeah!
