For weeks following the announcement that Jon Stewart would be leaving The Daily Show, people speculated about who would be the next host.
Here at BUST, we were anxious to see a woman’s name in the mix, and on Friday, we learned that our prayers came close to being answered.
Comedian Amy Schumer recently revealed that Comedy Central approached her for the gig. However, much to our disappointment, she turned down the offer. Schumer noted that the five-year contract is what ultimately caused her to pass up the coveted position of The Daily Show host.
“I was so honored to be asked and considered,” Schumer told Angela McCormack at Pedestrian. “With Comedy Central, I project so much ‘You’re my parents!’ on the network and the people who run it, so them saying, ‘We believe in you and trust that you can do this,’ I thought, ‘Oh my God, thank you!’”
She continued, “And then I thought, ‘Well, I could give everyone I love a job, and we could all be together for five years. But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years—I love not knowing. And I’ve never done anything safe or to make money. So, you know, I said, ‘I can’t start now.’”
We respect your decision, Amy. But still, I think we should pour one out for what could have been.
