When the photographer Stephanie Diani saw a group of older burlesque performers, The Legends of Burlesque, she was mesmerized. Consumed by images of the women who graced the stages of the Miss Exotic World pageant, the artist located some of the most renowned performers whose ages ranged from the 50s to the 70s. She then visited the women’s homes, chatted with them, and took their portraits as they donned their favorite outfits.
The beautifully diverse group of women is celebrated here for their style, courage, and wit. Each with a unique aura, a certain je ne sais quoi, the women luxuriate in elaborate sparkling garments, their own erotic power unabashedly expressed through the design and lighting of their own personal stage. They cast shadows on the walls in sheer gowns, position themselves effortlessly in babydoll pink kitchens, and shake their hips to the tune of their own organic melodies; one dog even dances on the floor! In a world where youth is hyper-sexualized and women are taught to fear the aging process, these ladies issue a much needed reminder that beauty lies within the creative spirit.
