In the fall of 2022, Chan Marshall AKA Cat Power paid homage to Bob Dylan with a recreation of his iconic 1966 show, recorded live at the venue it was titled after. (Fun fact: Dylan’s recording actually took place at a different spot, but it was mislabeled in production.) While she’s well known for her covers, it was an ambitious undertaking to revisit the full 15-song set. But Marshall always stays true to the artists she emulates, while simultaneously reinterpreting their work through her own visionary virtuosity.
Like Dylan’s original performance, the first seven songs are sparsely acoustic with guitar, harmonica, and Marshall’s intoxicating vocals, wrapping up with a delicately fingerpicked rendition of “Mr. Tambourine Man.” The second half shifts to a full backing band, starting with the raucous “Tell Me, Momma.” Marshall expertly honors one of her idol’s most legendary moments on a night that will surely be historic for her as well.
