Remember just a few weeks ago, when everyone was so excited about Bridesmaids opening? And all those social networking efforts, including one here on our very own site, that were encouraging women to go out and see it on its opening weekend, so that it would do well at the box office, and we ladies could look forward to possibly getting another non-sucky movie about and for women in the next year or ten? And remember that the movie actually did do well at the box office? And remember how proud we felt that all of our social networking efforts had maybe worked? Do you remember that?
Well, now get a load of this. Even though Bridesmaids was being called “the female Hangover,” it turns out that it still can’t hold a candle to “the male Hangover“–The Hangover II. Because The Hangover II just pulled in $135.15 million domestically and $60.25 million internationally over just five days — which is being called the the best opening for an R-rated comedy, ever. I mean, it didn’t just do well. It did the best. Ever.
In comparison, Bridesmaids has earned only $89.6 million since it opened on May 13th. In other words, Hangover II totally kicked Bridesmaids‘ ass. And although I’m sure it’s just an unfortunate coincidence that the two films’ opening days were so close together, it still feels like a smackdown somehow. Like, oh yeah ladies? You think you got yourselves a Hangover? We’ll show you what a real Hangover looks like. And we’ll prove that dick flicks still rule at the box office.
Meanwhile, everyone* who’s seen The Hangover II says it sucked, and everyone* who’s seen Bridesmaids agrees that it was full-on genius (*”everyone” here refers to a couple of blogs and forum posts I’ve just read).
So just stop making such a big deal about how much money Hangover II made already. We get it.
