The fashion world has long been fascinated by androgyny — but all too often, the fashion world’s definition of “androgyny” means a skinny girl in pants. Jaden Smith has been doing genderless dressing in his own way for some time, notably wearing a long white skirt to prom.
Now, the fashion world is getting on board. The seventeen-year-old actor and son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith stars in a new campaign for Louis Vuitton Womenswear, looking amazing in an embroidered skirt, white fringed top and black leather jacket as he poses with three female models in a photo titled “Heroine.”
“Why does Jaden Smith star in this campaign? He represents a generation that has assimilated the codes of true freedom, one that is free of manifestos and questions about gender,” Louis Vuitton designer Nicholas Ghesquière said in a press release published by E! Online.
“Wearing a skirt comes as naturally to him as it would to a woman who, long ago, granted herself permission to wear a man’s trench or a tuxedo.”
Jaden seems to agree that the campaign is a big deal. On Instagram, he wrote, “Thank You So Much @louisvuitton And @nicolasghesquiere For The Opportunity To Impact This World.”
We’re thrilled to see the mainstream fashion definition of “androgyny” begin to include black boys in skirts as well as white girls in pants. People of all genders, races and sizes should be able to wear whatever clothes they feel best in, whether that means skirts, dresses, pants, shorts, rompers, jumpsuits or even wizard robes. As Jaden himself once wisely wrote, “Went to TopShop to Buy Some Girl Clothes, I Mean ‘Clothes.'”
In other words, there are no “women’s clothes” and “men’s clothes,” only clothes. Now that’s a fashion rule we can get behind.
