The Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a badass set up for young women in music. It’s a nonprofit mentoring project that works to empower young women and girls by using music to foster volunteerism, leadership, creative thinking and self-respect. This December, Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls will celebrate ten years of important work by honoring a few women in music that we at BUST are 200 percent on board with.
Musicians Kathleen Hanna, Sara Landeau and Santigold and New York’s first daughter, advocate and WMRCG alum Chiara de Blasio are among the women being honored at Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls’ Rhythm & Soul awards. Other honorees include Universal Music Group vice president Carla Miller and DJ Rekha. All these women are winners in the department of general badassery, and in my mind, definitely have that crystal warrior princess cred.
You can buy tickets for the event – held in New York on December 4 – here. The proceeds will go toward providing scholarships for the Girls Rock! Camp and other music and mentorship programs. It sounds great to me—I’d love to be in a room full of femmes who are just tearing it up.
