A new Star Wars movie trailer has dropped, and there’s a lot to talk about here:
Before you watch it, you should know that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place before A New Hope, making it chronologically the first Star Wars story in the canon, if you (like me) prefer to go through your life as though the prequels never happened. Shh, shh, it never happened. Back to Rogue One.
The first character we meet is Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. She’s getting dressed down by Mon Mothma (played by Genevieve O’Reilly) for being “reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined.” “This is a rebellion, isn’t it?” Jyn quips, “I rebel.”
Ooooh, so right away we know this movie passes the Bechdel test: in the trailer, we have two women (whose characters both have names BTW) talking about something that isn’t a man — they’re talking about Jyn Erso’s badassery. All right! Explosions happen, Jyn joins the rebellion, there’s running…
There’s a super-bad unknown dude in a super-cool cape and — IS THAT THE DEATH STAR?
…action scenes, AT-ATs…
Forest Whitaker, a sword (a sword? Really?) and then WHAT THE F—
Oh, you can NOT play with our emotions like that. WHAT IS GOING ON?
The movie comes out mid-December, and while we’re sorry that we’ll have to wait longer to see the Poe-Finn-Rey-Kylo storyline develop, hopefully Rogue One will give us our fill of action and backstory that we — wait a minute, do you hear male tears?
Yes, it seems that men are upset over this trailer. And not because that horrible alarm sounds like a hangry hippopotamus whose Netflix subscription has expired. They’re angry because there’s a GIRL in this movie! Over on the popular MRA message board Roosh V Forum, commenters are raising the very valid point that there shouldn’t be a GIRL in this Star Wars movie, because the last movie already had a girl in it!
Seriously! They won’t give dudes a chance! I mean REALLY, when are white men going to get a chance to star in action movies?? Ring Ring! Oh, REALITY called, and she says, “All the fucking time.” Oh. Well. Cool story, bros. Stay home.
I’m so happy to see the Star Wars franchise casting more diverse actors in the newer movies. While we’ve got Reality on the phone, let’s talk with her about how weird it is that we have talking robots, Wookies, telekinetic strangulation, and whatever the hell Jabba the Hutt is, but audiences are still so reluctant to accept a female character? Last time I checked, women actually exist, and Wookies do not. Anyhoo, I’m glad to see the tide is changing, albeit slowly. My heart leaps for the children who watch The Force Awakens and now, Rogue One, and see a universe where they are included.
Are you excited to see Rogue One? What do you think of Jyn Erso? Who would win in a fight, R2-D2 or BB-8?
