Last week, women around the world bravely shared their abortion stories as #ShoutYourAbortion trended on Twitter. The movement got started when Amelia Bonow shared her abortion story on Facebook after learning of the House of Representative’s vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Lindy West took Amelia’s story to Twitter with the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, shared her own abortion story, and with the help of a few “co-conspirators” including Kimberly Morrison, a viral hashtag was born.
But #ShoutYourAbortion didn’t stop there. Amelia Bonow shared a video of a community button making party and celebration that happened at Seattle bar Speckled and Drake last week, proving that the movement can thrive offline as well as on.
“It’s not about me, it’s not about Lindy West, it’s not about Kimberly, it’s about the fact that we are all connected and we fucking know that and we are down to lift each other’s voices,” Amelia says in the video.
“And that’s the only reason why shit is viral now. It doesn’t really have anything to do with one person or two people or three people. It’s a force and it can’t be turned off.”
She adds, “This is a grassroots, DIY, Seattle movement, just like It Gets Better, just like Take Back The Night. We are taking back this conversation, which should have belonged to women this entire time, and the thing that’s beautiful about it is that it’s completely irreversible.
“People are talking about abortion in a completely new way and they can’t fucking stop us. There’s no turning back the cultural tide at this point, and women are goddamned ready for it.”
