We are so proud of these awesome women from the Rutgers University Slam Team and their powerful group poem: “Rape Poem to End All Rape Poems.”
In case you needed further proof that rape culture really does suck.
“Rape Poem to End All Rape Poems” has received over 95,000 views on Facebook, after gaining considerable popularity from being reblogged on Tumblr.
The poem was performed at the 14th annual College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at the University of Colorado-Boulder on March 12-15.
I have personal feels for this poem, especially considering two of these young women, Kate Thomas and Justice Hehir, are friends of mine; I’m so super proud!
Be sure to also check out this awesome poem performed by member of the Rutgers University slam team Justice Hehir, who received a nomination for “Best Poet” at CUPSI.
Justice shared with me some of her feelings concerning the relationship between feminism and slam poetry:
“Slam poetry is invaluable to feminist culture because it provides a forum for free, honest, unmitigated truth and expression… that collective dissatisfaction, the realization of ‘this is not acceptable’- that cultivates change. “
“This sort of connection has been fundamental to the feminist movement from the beginning- women sharing their experiences, and other women saying, “I’ve seen/felt/experienced that as well”, and then collectively deciding to take action to redress the inequities they faced…it embraces, rather than rejects, our very human need to share our feelings and experiences in the hopes of making someone else feel just a little less alone.”
Keep up the inspirational work, ladies! You’ve done something absolutely amazing.
“The rape poems will continue until there’s no damn material left.”
