Sylvan Esso is a spacey, melodic duo composed of Amelia Randall Meath (of Mountain Man) and Nicholas Sandborn (of Megafun). This collabo spawned their first release less than a month ago: the Hey Mami/Play it Right 12″ is an EP featuring mixed, accapella, and instrumental versions of the two songs.
“Hey Mami” is the song we can’t get out of our heads. Meath’s voice trickles in, building harmonies worthy the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Subtle electronic hints worm their way into the groove and then, my friend, when that beat drops (James Blake-style) you are so not ready for it in the best way possible.
Usually, these sorts of jams feature indecipherable and/or meaningless lyrics (and I am not just saying this because I think Grimes really needs to include a lyric booklet on her next album) but this song features 100% certified awesome word-stuffs. The track speaks from the perspective of a cat-caller, harassing a woman as she walks down the street. It makes for a creepy yet sassy song that I’ve had on repeat all afternoon.
