The pint-sized Kameron Slade is probably one of the most adorable fifth-graders ever. And he’s also a frontrunner for most outspoken. A native of Queens, New York, the 10-year-old penned a powerful speech about the importance of marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Not surprisingly, things got a little sticky for the opinionated elementary school student. Principal Beryl Bailey of P.S. 195 initially banned Slade from reading the speech at a schoolwide competition, calling it “inappropriate” according to a Huffington Post report.
Infuriated (and rightly so), his mother took it to the news. And in what was probably one of the most badass moments in kiddie history, Slade presented his entire speech to NY1 reporters, pretty much ensuring that his words will live on in television/YouTube/the blogosphere for a long, long time.
An excerpt of his “inappropriate” speech read:
“Like President Obama, I believe that all people should have the right to marry whoever they want…I believe that same-sex marriage should be accepted worldwide, and that parents and teachers should start to discuss these issues without shame to their children.”
Slade also mentioned his personal interactions with two of his mother’s friends who are in a committed lesbian relationship.
But this story has an even happier ending: Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott permitted the boy to read his paper in front of the entire school during a Monday assembly, NY1 reported.
Unfortunately, the competition ended before Slade had a chance to present this piece, but in terms of impact, he’s the surefire winner. Check out his NY1 reading here.
