Are you the type of woman who loves dressing up as iconic characters from your favorite comic books at events like comic cons? Are you tired of spineless guys harassing you while you do so? Are you sick of the “Fake Geek Girl” label? Are you wishing for a friendly and safe venue for women who read comic books? Don’t fret. You’re not alone. There are many women out there who also feel this way. Introducing Geek Girl Con! You heard right! It’s “The Celebration of the female geek,” a non-profit comic exhibition complete with an anti- harassment policy.
The GeekGirlCon began in 2010 in its hometown of Seattle. This year it takes place on October 19th and 20th, and will be held at The Conference Center at the Washington State Convention Center. There’s plenty of time to plan a trip to the Emerald City! Information about programming, volunteering, exhibiting and the artist alley for 2013 will be announced on their site soon. Right now you can buy passes, make a donation, or volunteer, and they even have a few paid positions on their site. Hopefully the GeekGirlCon will inspire other comic conventions that are in the same feminist approach. Women geeks and supporters unite at the GeekGirlCon!
